Covid caused a bit of a break but not as much being too heavy for my frame seems to have done: I noticed I was developing shin splints without knowing at the time what they were, and they were followed by a painful stress fracture. I also joined a football team for overweight people a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed it, not missing a single session except for holidays. I bought a new, better treadmill last year, and use it every morning for 40 minutes. I've got my 10,000 steps in every day this year. I just don't have the attention span for all the sitting around involved, so would usually be gone before even half an hour had elapsed. I once lived next door to a gym for nine months, and so did pop to it every now and again. Unfortunately, I seem to be one who signs up to the idea that purchasing the equipment is enough: using it is something else entirely.

I've always been full of good intentions, buying a weight set and treadmill for our garage when we moved in, for example. The fact that I'm so out of shape is chiefly down to a sedentary lifestyle and cooking portions which are far, far too large, even if the food itself is relatively healthy.

None of that applies to me: my skeleton is very slight (aside from a shoulders which would be the envy of many bodybuilders, probably a result of lugging around a massively oversized head, which may also be responsible for two decades of back injuries), and on the very rare occasions when I've needed to do anything athletic (jumping over walls, falling safely on ice, etc), the old instincts are still there. I can well understand that some people have big bone structures, underactive thyroids, or problems exercising. I'm afraid I can't blame my condition on anybody else. I've been approaching 100kg/16 stone/220lb far too closely for my liking. According to my BMI, I should be about seven or eight feet tall. So let's see whether I can stick with this. And it might encourage other people to do the same. And since I'm utterly unaccountable, and hence have contrived to get myself into a terrible physical state, I figured adopting that same approach might be useful for me. Having a topic which she updates daily on a language-learning forum has helped keep her accountable. My better half has set herself the challenge of studying Russian for at least half an hour each day, a challenge which she has been meeting for over two years now. I suspect creating a topic might come across as rather self-indulgent but there's method to it.
